tiresias
story

“TIRESIAS
How terrible—to see the truth when the truth is only pain to him who sees! I knew it
well, but I put it from my mind, else I never would have come.

OEDIPUS
What's this? Why so grim, so dire?

TIRESIAS
Just send me home. You bear your burdens, I'll bear mine. It's better that way, please
believe me.”

What should I tell you about the one who, in life, knew almost as much as the dead, and
now dead, sees things that perhaps not even the gods can foresee?

How can I begin to understand, even now, even as I tell this tale, what kind of desire or
knowledge, what phantom or prophecy pushed Tiresias out of the Nether?

His blind eyes survey Hell with the tranquility of one who knows it.
He fights when he must, he rests if he feels so, and proceeds toward the deepest circles
relentless and serene.

What burden does he carry this time? His empty eyes have always seen too much, too
deep, and even the gods grew tired of him revealing their secrets.
He is an oracle and a mage, and his journey and his motives are shielded even from my
gaze.

Regardless, his certainty cannot be misinterpreted. Something is guiding Tiresias toward
an unseen goal.

Life

Tiresias's life was as unconventional as he is. His father was Everes, a shepherd who
descended from Udaeus, who in turn came from a toot of a dragon sowed by Cadmus,
the founder of Thebes.
It may be of some importance to notice that Cadmus sowed only half of the teeth. Jason
ended up planting the rest of them, but this is another story entirely.

Compared to his father's side, it seems almost unimpressive that the mother was Chariclo,
a nymph devoted to Athena, from whom perhaps Tiresias' powers come.

If his origin is somehow peculiar, it still does not match the rest of his existence. He
displeased Hera, who turned him into a woman.
As a woman, Tiresias became a priestess, married and had children, and loved Manto, her
daughter, above them all. She, too, had her...gift? Her curse? She could see what is
unseen, just like the mother.
Seven years later, she regained her original aspect, and Tiresias turned into a man again.

I do not believe anyone can understand the complexity of a mind who has seen and lived
so many opposites. Tiresias is blind yet seeing, he was male, and she was female, he lived
seven lifespans conversing with the dead, and after death still remembered the living.

Unlike the other souls softened by the Nether, Tiresias has always remained fully awake.
I shall follow his journey with the utmost curiosity.

Regalia

Tiresias never needed more than his staff to guide his blind steps or to summon his
incredible powers.
Plausibly, he could both walk and cast terrible spells quite easily even without it. Likely,
we will never know.
